Lecture with Dr. Sigrid Kannengießer (University of Bremen) and the Oldenburg Repair Café
More and more people are trying to repair their defective media technologies such as cell phones or computers, but also old record players and slide projectors, in order to avoid buying new devices. The motivation for repairing is also based on the awareness that the technologies are produced under ecologically harmful and socially inhumane conditions and are disposed of in an equally ecologically and socially unacceptable way after use.
As part of a qualitative study, Dr. Sigrid Kannengießer examined various repair cafés, including the Oldenburg Repair Café and the “Raum für Reparatur” (Space for Repair) by Leipzig artist Hannes Waldschütz (financed by the Edith-Russ-Haus) in Oldenburg. In doing so, she investigated the questions of who the actors are who repair their media technologies, what motivation underlies repairing and what this action means for a sustainable approach to media technologies in a mediatized society.
Following the lecture, the Oldenburg Repair Café will introduce itself, an initiative of various actors that has been helping people to repair their appliances, clothes and other things for two years with the help of numerous volunteers. It currently takes place every month on the 1st Saturday in the rooms of the Oldenburg State Theater in Baumgartenstr. 11-12 instead.
Venue: Seminar room of the Edith-Russ-Haus
