Workshop

Since the Edith Russ House for Media Art was founded, cooperation with the Carl von Ossietzky University and the Master of Arts Media Art course established there in 2000 has been part of the concept of the Media Art House. Workshops led by media artists are organized twice a year as part of this collaboration.

3 hours of pre-production per day; shooting of the video on November 22nd after dark. The exact times will be agreed with the  Students agreed.

The artist Naomi Ben-Shahar will work with up to 12 Students work on the topic of “mapping” and movement in space. The aim is to produce a video that combines traditional video technology with Max/Jitter interactive software. Jeremy Bernstein, artist and one of the developers of the Jitter software, will be the  He will introduce students to working with this software, in which one medium is fed in (input), from which another medium then results (output). For the video, he will develop an interface that analyzes live videos and translates human interactions, movements and clusterings into music. The students will act both in front of and behind the camera for the filming – in complete darkness. The movements of the people recorded will be traced visually and acoustically, resulting in an abstract video artwork.

The students are involved in all phases of the work.

Here is an excerpt from Naomi Ben-Shahar’s project proposal:

“I would like to use a new software which enables the analysis of movement and clustering in live video. In the past few years my video projects used small headlamps to trace social events in the dark (a party in the dark). I looked at human interactions in different locations and situations. I am interested in the dynamics of groups and the movement between individual consciousness and is mental space vs. the “real” space of social becoming – the structure of networks of people that can become a fascinating, dynamic composite singular life form.”
