In her performances and video works, Sükran Moral deals with themes and places in Turkish society that have also been of interest to Western academia, especially female researchers, for over a hundred years: the role of women, polygamy, the brothel, the hamam and the harem. The Western gaze “sees” in them above all the cliché of a sensual Orient that serves as a devalued and at the same time coveted counter-image to its own culture.

In the workshop we want to talk about what happens when Western eyes encounter Moral’s works. Do Moral’s works unveil “something”? Do they counter the Western gaze? How can we talk about Moral’s art without only thematizing our own? And: who is “we” anyway?
