The social networks that have been very popular for some years now have given the term “friend” a completely new meaning. “Friends” is a workshop that transfers online services such as Facebook, Schüler-VZ and others to physical space on paper. The participants create a profile page in the large “Friends” book and make their own personal “Friends” booklet. The manual production of the booklets contrasts with the highly efficient world of social networks, which is limited to screens.
Different types of friendship and dealing with private and public matters are up for debate: Who is my friend? How well do we know each other? Where do we meet? How does the social web affect interpersonal relationships?
About the artist: Aram Bartholl is a member of the ‘Urban Media Salon’ Berlin and the artist group ‘Free Art and Technology Lab’ founded in New York and examines the relationship between the online data world and everyday living space in his works. http://www.datenform.de
