From the Margins to the Mainstream
New studies of contemporary African art in Western cities from 1989 to 2011
Raphael Chikukwa, curatorial director of the National Gallery Harare (Zimbabwe)
Raphael Chikukwa analyzed exhibitions of contemporary African art in Western metropolises and reflected on them from an intercultural perspective.
The visibility of “African images” in terms of their discursive structures and narrative figures in the European-African context will be addressed. A critical reflection of current discourses in visual art and curatorial practice is central. The results of the workshop, which took place together with students at the University of Oldenburg, will be presented.
Raphael Chikukwa is a freelance curator who has curated numerous exhibitions, mainly in the UK and Zimbabwe. He co-founded the first curatorial forum in Zimbabwe and was the curator for the Zimbabwe Pavilion at the 54. & 55th Venice Biennale 2011/2013.
In cooperation with the European Master’s program Migration and Intercultural Relations and the Master’s program of the Faculty of Linguistics and Cultural Studies at the University of Oldenburg.
