The courageous artist from Turkey does not aim to please in the conventional sense with her art. Rather, she uses performances, actions, videos and photographs in a provocative way to draw attention to various forms of oppression of women and the places where they lack freedom. Family, religion, immigration, prostitution and transsexuality are the major themes of Şükran Moral, in which social marginalization and the restriction of freedom are intertwined with violence.
Prof. Dr. Christine Eifler is the spokesperson for the Center for Gender Studies at the University of Bremen. After studying philosophy in Leipzig and Berlin, she worked at research institutions and at the Humboldt University in Berlin. This was followed by research projects at the universities of Hanover and Bremen. From 2003 to 2006, she was head of the doctoral program Gender Dynamics in Violent Conflicts, funded by the Heinrich Böll Foundation. Her research and publications focus on the military and gender relations; women’s issues and women’s politics in the GDR; cultural differences between East and West.
