Long Night of Music: Andrea Guterres & Ute Wassermann

17. June 2023, 17:00 - 21:55

The program items of the Edith-Russ-Haus:

Andrea Guterres: Walls (world premiere)

The 8-channel sound installation Walls is based on the poem of the same name by the 20th century Greek poet Cavafy. In the poem, the protagonist describes the sudden realization of being surrounded by walls and laments the fact that he was unaware of their creation. In the piece, the walls are a metaphor for humanity’s entrapment in its own destiny due to its inherently self-destructive nature, particularly in relation to climate change, war and violence. The work will be installed on the lawn of the Edith-Russ-Haus and will run continuously as a loop.

Andrea Guterres is a composer, classical guitarist and sound artist from Sydney, Australia. She specializes in electro-acoustic music and spatial soundscapes. Her work can be heard in a variety of contexts including performances, sound installations and multimedia artworks. With creative collaboration at the heart of her practice and philosophy, Andrea often takes an interdisciplinary approach to composition and enjoys working closely with artists and performers from other disciplines.

Ute Wassermann: Body Snatch

In Body Snatch, Ute Wassermann’s voice merges with the sound of bird whistles, membranes and percussion objects. The objects become extended body parts or transplants of her vocal body. She sings in the extreme regions of her voice, her multidimensional singing oscillating between an/organic, human, animalistic and electronic sound qualities. Does her voice remain human or does it become something else?

Ute Wassermann tours worldwide as an improviser, she realizes audiovisual performances and composes for soloists and ensembles. An important source of inspiration for her singing are soundscapes, from which she composes imaginary acoustic habitats. Her multidimensional singing oscillates between electronic, an/organic, human and animalistic qualities. In addition, she alienates and expands her voice with bird and palate whistles, objects, acoustic costumes or various microphones. In this way, performative vocal figures are created in the field of improvisation, composition and performance art.
