Media laboratory in the Edith Russ House for Media Art
The Oldenburg Media Art House and the Waag Society www.waag.org invite you to have fun with new media this weekend. Digital film and photo cameras, laptops, scanners and sound mixers are available to produce image and sound material – your own material from home is also welcome – which is then “mixed up” in the Animation Machine, Digital Storytelling and ScratchWorx tools. This is followed by one-week workshops and summer schools for young people and senior citizens, whose projects are presented in the form of performances, VJ/DJ parties, films, animations and much more.

Animation Machine
Just like a cartoon, stop-motion animations are created here, i.e. small film clips made up of individual images. The Animation Machine is equipped with an (invisible) computer, a camera and a projector and is very easy to use: Objects – this can be anything you bring along or you make drawings and collages and a storyboard for a real story – placed on the work surface, press a large button and the image is captured. The finished animation can then also be projected onto the same work surface via a button.
Digital storytelling
Telling each other stories has a long tradition: there are bedtime stories, legends and fairy tales. There are stories in books, stories among friends, at school and in the family, such as grandparents’ memories of earlier times. With digital storytelling, your stories go online. Equipped with iBook laptops, digital film and photo cameras, scanners, microphones and sound mixers, you can create images and sound for your own digital stories in the form of small “online movies”.
ScratchWorx
The ScratchWorx console is an interactive live performance tool that allows you to scratch your digital material in groups of three people at the same time. To do this, you select individual elements from the image and sound material that you have previously produced or brought with you and synchronize them on the corresponding iBook laptops. These sequences selected by you are then mixed and manipulated “live” in a kind of VJ/DJ party. The entire action will be visible on large projections.
