A long wooden walkway on Julius-Mosen-Platz in Oldenburg. On it you can see people with umbrellas, protecting themselves from the spray coming from six nozzles above them. Enchanted, these visitors remain under the umbrellas. Seen from a distance, they form an absurd but poetic picture. Curious, you move closer, take an umbrella yourself and step out into the rain, only to stand still, just as fascinated. RainDance is an interactive sound installation by American artist Paul DeMarinis. Spray jets of small water droplets, which rain down from the six nozzles, transport sound vibrations. The various melodies are inaudible until the water jet is interrupted by a large umbrella. Only then is the sound decoded and reproduced by the surface of the umbrella. The umbrella becomes a loudspeaker. A private listening room, exclusively for those standing under it. However, the individual “rain dances” inspired by the sounds can combine to form a collective choreography.
In the summer rain of RainDance, Julius-Mosen-Platz becomes an oasis of sound and the most beautiful summer retreat in Oldenburg.
